What you'll learn

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) is an autonomous body that provides standardized recruitment and assessment services to various banks in India, including Public Sector Banks (PSBs), Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), and Co-operative Banks. It acts as a common platform for recruiting personnel at different levels.

Description of IBPS Bank Exams

IBPS conducts several key examinations annually to fill thousands of vacancies in the banking sector:

1. IBPS PO (Probationary Officer/Management Trainee)

This is for the recruitment of entry-level management positions in Public Sector Banks. POs undergo a probation period and are trained in various banking functions before being confirmed as managers.

  • Process: Prelims Exam -> Mains Exam -> Interview.

2. IBPS Clerk (Clerical Cadre)

This exam recruits personnel for clerical positions, such as cashiers, single window operators, and various supporting roles in bank branches.

  • Process: Prelims Exam -> Mains Exam. (No interview stage).

3. IBPS SO (Specialist Officer)

This exam recruits candidates with specific professional qualifications for specialist roles like IT Officer, Marketing Officer, Agricultural Field Officer, Law Officer, HR Officer, etc.

  • Process: Prelims Exam -> Mains Exam -> Interview.

4. IBPS RRB (Regional Rural Banks)

IBPS also manages recruitment for officers and office assistants in India’s regional rural banks across the country.

Exam Structure and Assessment

The exams conducted by IBPS are highly competitive and structured into distinct stages to thoroughly assess a candidate's aptitude and suitability for the job:

  • Computer-Based Tests (CBTs): All stages of the exams (Prelims and Mains) are conducted online.
  • Two-Tier System: Most major exams utilize a preliminary (qualifying) and a main examination (marks count towards final merit).
  • Interview: Officer-level posts (PO and SO) include a final interview round to assess soft skills, personality, and general awareness.

IBPS is recognized for its standardized testing procedures, ensuring transparency in the massive recruitment drives across the Indian banking sector.
